So this shall be my chronice of a project that my wife called "Are you ,explitive deleted, kidding me?
Back in Feb I purchased a 1970 Dodge Dart Swinger for 1500 bucks. Slant 6 in "running" condition. Terrible interior and a worn out everything.
However the body was straight and I thought how hard could this be to make a driver out of.
Fast forward to August 1st. I have rebuilt the carb and messed with this thing to no avail on getting a solid idle and any power from this car. I decide to do something drastic.
After a quick online search I knew what had to be done. Summit Racing was called and two boxes of parts were delived to my door, a few phone calls were made to source a new heart for the beast.
Thats right. A 5.9L magnum engine swap from a 2000 Durango was the only logical choice.
I shall try to update this post with pictures of the progress and how much of a pain this is going to be. Wish me luck Oppo.
Update 8/25/2014
I have begun tear down on the car. Engine is pretty much ready to come out. (Radiator, Exhaust, Fuel Lines, All Accessories, Trans. Linkage is out/unhooked). Also dropped drive shaft and fuel tank.
Update 9/2/2014
Picked up the magnum engine today. Looks good, no burned oil smell or leaks on the block that i could see. Engine came with some extra accessories too! Alternator, A/C compressor and power steering pump are all still there. This week I will tear down the engine a little more and start swapping in the parts needed to place the magnum in the dart chassis.

Good luck with your project. Seems like it will be fun when you finish it.

Damn! Is the Dart in the picture the actual one you bought? For $1500?! That's a really straight and solid looking car.
Glad you gave up on the slant-6. A car that nice looking deserves a decent V8, unless you went with one of these:
Keep us posted on the progress!

This is very special. I got through my senior year in high school, college, and two years in the military with a 1970 Dodge Dart with the 318ci V-8, painted that same blue.
I wish I had that Dart now.

Dude, you're my hero. My dad had a 2000 Dodge Durango with the 5.9 that ran for 270k miles before the transmission started to slip, at which point he decided to junk it. I swear that motor was the best lazy V8 ever - it would practically idle down the highway. But the couple times we ran it hard, it sounded amazing and was a total beast.
I still wonder how long that thing would've run if he'd just had the transmission replaced, cause that motor still passed smog with flying colors and barely burned any oil, and it never needed any repairs. I think it got a new water pump once, and maybe spark plugs at some point, but other than that it just kept on goin'. I was really bummed Dad got rid of it before I could figure out how to get it into my Mom's Prius.
Anyway, Dart's gonna be amazing. Keep me posted.
